NARUs a pretty common nowadays. I’m more sensitive to NARUs since I got my wrist slapped last week. It can happen to anyone.
Thanks for the heads up, Mike!

Sizing the “Make Money” eBook market on eBay
Apr 14th, 2008 by estreet

Let’s estimate the amount of eBay sales of eBooks about making money. Sellers strive to differentiate their products by using different keywords and categories. So the best approach is to research the big sellers and multiply by a fudge factor to account for the small sellers. Let’s call the fudge factor 2.

I’ll start with Kekoa64. He sold $7.5K in 30 days a few months ago. jjfjq sold $4.5K and mysterygiant ~$1K. These three sellers had combined sales of over 1,135 eBooks during this 30 day period and $13K in revenue.

Multiplying by 2 produces an eBay sales figure of “Make Money” eBooks of $26K per month. That’s $312K per year! The only cost of sales is eBay fees. That’s the sweetest market I’ve ever seen.

Now I should mention for comparison purposes that Skip McGrath sells printed material on how to make money on eBay. During the same period, he sold $1.5K in books and another $9.5K in lighting kits for sellers.

Yes, this is a great niche, if you can get in it. But there are really only three sellers making a living on it out of 1 million eBay sellers.  And these three aren’t just average people, either.  They’re extremely sharp.

eBay Pulse only shows 1 listing
Apr 7th, 2008 by estreet

Josh Kulp has the only listing on the main eBay Pulse. eBay used to show 10 listings per top level category. But now, you have to drill down to a leaf category to see any other pulse listings.

I liked seeing more listings on the default Pulse page.

Oh, happy, happy day!

I haven’t heard back from the developers program yet on how to spot test on eBay production. I’ll update this post when get some good info.

Being cast out of the mothership feels pretty bad. I don’t want to do it again.

Now I’m restricted from eBay
Apr 4th, 2008 by estreet

Man, talk about being hair trigger with the eBay policies.  Today I got nailed for shill bidding.  Let me explain.

Like a good eBay developer, I followed eBay’s recommendation to leave positive feedback upon payment from the buyer.

It’s impossible to test feedback in the eBay sandbox.  So on eBay production, I created and bought two $1 listings clearly labeled “Test – Do not bid” in the title and description in the “Everything Else -> Test Auctions -> General” category.

I tested it and it worked.  The client’s code was successfully released 7 days ago.

Today all my listings were cancelled and my account restricted for 14 days for shill bidding.  I had to take the shill bidding tutorial.  (It was actually pretty interesting.  Your relatives, friends and coworkers/employees can’t bid on your listings.)

I can ride out the 14 days.  But I really want to be able to spot test on production before affecting tens of thousands of listings.  Now what?

Lessons learned:

  1. “Test-Do not bid” listings in the Test category do not give you special privileges on eBay.com
  2. Don’t bother with eBay’s live chat, make your case by responding to the notice from your My eBay page.
  3. TBD.  I’m waiting for a response from a pink on the eBay developers forum for testing suggestions.

I hope you never get an email like this:

SB NOTICE: eBay Registration Warning – Shill Bidding

Hello xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,This email is to notify you that your account privileges have been restricted for 14 days due to violation of our Shill Bidding Policy. During this period, you are limited to using only the Fixed Price Format when listing items for sale on eBay.

Shill Bidding is bidding that artificially increases an item’s price or apparent desirability. Shill Bidding is prohibited on eBay. Information on eBay’s Shill Bidding Policy can be found at:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/seller-shill-bidding.html

At this time, in order to bid or list new items in the fixed-price format, you will need to complete a brief tutorial designed to help you better understand our policy regarding Shill Bidding. You’ll be asked to take the tutorial the next time you sign in to your eBay account. Once you’ve completed it, you can begin buying and selling again immediately. However, you will still be limited to using only the Fixed Price Format for a period of 14 days as stated above.

Your account has been found to be involved in Shill Bidding with the following associated accounts:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxIf you have other eBay accounts, this restriction also applies to those accounts. During the term of this restriction, you may not register any new accounts.Your account will remain restricted for 14 days. Once you have completed the tutorial, and the 14 days have elapsed, the restrictions on your account will be lifted.

eBay Partner Network earnings reports

ePN just started reporting commission earnings. They report clicks and impressions every 3 hours and earnings once a day in the late afternoon. For example, the earnings for April 1 show up late on April 2.eBay Partner Network

Some people have complained on the forum about the Flash chart not showing in their browser. I use the same software from Fusion Charts on eSeller Street. Love it!

It runs on Flash version 8. Hopefully this will push people to upgrade their Flash players. While they’re at it, people should upgrade to IE7 too because Windows compatibility issues between IE7 and IE6 are a pain. Sorry… I digress.
